SHILLONG: The recruitment of a new batch of GNLA cadres in Garo Hills with the help of ULFA is a cause of worry for the State police.

A senior government official told reporters on Monday that recently a new batch of GNLA cadres were trained by ULFA and “this is worrisome for the Government”.

The GNLA, which has in its possession sophisticated weapons including rocket and grenade launchers, is also recruiting youths in batches.

Though the police made success in busting the makeshift camps of the Garo outfit and seizing its weapons, the security forces are finding it difficult to neutralize GNLA due to the difficult and inaccessible terrain where the GNLA men are taking shelter.

Moreover, due to extreme poverty in certain pockets of Garo Hills, GNLA has lured many youths offering ‘jobs’ with the outfit in various capacities. The remuneration which the militant outfit had offered was also attractive prompting many jobless youths to join GNLA.
