ALS workshop on musical instruments, performing arts

TURA, April 3: The A•chik Literature Society (ALS), Tura, in collaboration with Department of Garo, NEHU, Tura Campus, organised a regional workshop on traditional musical instruments and performing arts at the university campus from March 27 to 31.
Former president of A’chik Baptist Dal’gipa Krima (ABDK), Tura, Aloysius G. Momin, who was the chief guest on the last day of the workshop, suggested that teaching traditional music and dance can be taken up as a profession and as a means of livelihood.
He also suggested that the traditional musical instruments may be improved in keeping up with the times.
Head of the Department of Garo, NEHU, Tura Campus, Dr. Jacqueline R. Marak, in her address, appreciated the efforts as well as the achievement of the female participants in making and learning to play the flutes.
Lutherine R. Sangma, a retired IAS official, on the other hand, encouraged the participants to learn music and the Wangala dance accurately from the experts in the field.
It may be mentioned that wangala dance, making and playing of dama, chigring, flutes and sarinda-stringed instruments and grika dance were taught in the five-day workshop.
A total of 70 students from NEHU Tura, ICFAI University, Tura, Tura Government College, Don Bosco College, Tura, Capt. Williamson School, Tura, and Don Bosco School, Rongkhon, were part of the workshop.
As part of the programme, certificates were also distributed among the participants by the chief guest.
