SHILLONG: Shillong witnessed an unusual security ‘bandobast’ on Thursday.

After drawing flak from several quarters for the violent incidents during the KSU-sponsored Khasi National Awakening Day on April 4, the East Khasi Hills administration on Thursday made heavy security arrangements in the whole city in view of the rally organized by conglomeration of NGOs to protest the proposed New Shillong Township (NST) .

Right from Motphran to Khyndailad, police personnel with bacon and shield were seen posted every 20 metres and even the Special Weapon and Tactics Team (SWAT) personnel were seen guarding the entire stretch.

Two companies of security forces and eight magistrates were put on duty.

In addition, the administration also deployed Rapid Intervention Vehicle at Khyndailad to prevent any gathering which could pose a serious law and order threat.

“I have never seen this kind of vehicle and I am sure any miscreant would be scared to see such a vehicle,” said a roadside hawker in a lighter vein.

Fearing violence, several commercial establishments downed their shutters at the time of the public meeting.

East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Goyal informed that magistrates were deployed in the city to ensure that the law and order was maintained at all costs.

He said that the NGOs had sought permission to take out a rally, but the district administration gave its nod only for holding a meeting at Malki ground.

East Khasi Hills SP M Kharkrang said precautions were taken so that miscreants could not take advantage of the situation.
