Goals aplenty in state-level Subroto Cup quarterfinals

SHILLONG: Ten quarterfinal matches were held on Thursday in the state-level Subroto Mukherjee Cup football tournament in the U-17 boys, U-17 girls and U-14 boys events.

The fixtures were held at the JN Sports Complex, Polo.

In the girls’ matches, East Khasi Hills defeated South West Khasi Hills 3-0 and East Jaintia Hills beat East Garo Hills 4-0 in the early kick-offs.

Later in the day, South West Garo Hills overcame North Garo Hills 2-0 while West Khasi Hills trounced South Garo Hills 8-0.

Baiahunlang Mawlieh scored three goals and Bliancynora Myrthong four for West Khasi Hills.

In the boys U-17 games, West Jaintia Hills took down South Garo Hills 4-0, Ri-Bhoi beat West Khasi Hills 2-0 and North Garo Hills squeaked passed West Garo Hills 2-1.

The West Garo Hills U-14 team had a fantastic day, beating East Garo Hills by six goals to one.

North Garo Hills were not so lucky, going down 0-5 to West Khasi Hills.

The star of the day was arguably Homefreewell from Ri-Bhoi, who scored five of his team’s six goals in their 6-0 demolition of South Garo Hills.

On Friday, the U-17 boys semifinals will be held, with East Jaintia Hills facing Ri-Bhoi at 9am on Ground No. 1 followed by East Khasi Hills versus East Garo Hills at 11am.
