SHILLONG, April 12: The United Democratic Party (UDP) has decided to write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other central leaders on the need to stop incidents against the religious minorities across the country for peace and calm to prevail.
UDP general secretary, Jemino Mawthoh urged the central government to come up with strong measures to discourage radical elements from vitiating the atmosphere with hatred and animosity.
“We are going to take up with the Prime Minister and other central leaders the spurt in the incidents against religious minorities in different parts of the country. We want mutual respect, peace, and calm to prevail,” he said on Wednesday.
Condemning the alleged manhandling of two church leaders from Shillong in Patna on Monday, Mawthoh said if the report is true, any form of discrimination and atrocity perpetrated by radical elements of any religious group should not be tolerated in a secular country.
He said knee-jerk actions would not serve any purpose. “The government has to take a strong stand to ensure such incidents do not happen again,” he added.
“Let us protect secularism,” he said, stressing the need for people to be sensitised about the rights of the citizens, especially the minorities.
