SHILLONG: Even before the dust on revolting incident of superstition at Mawryngkang village near Wahkdait village in Pynursla could settle down, another such incident of superstition has surfaced in which a man was forced to eat dog excreta by his relatives after he was suspected of invoking evil spirits.
The latest incident happened at Mawting Sohryngkham , East Khasi Hills, on July 30.
Halorsing Kharumnuid (46) suffered the brutality before he was let off with warnings two days ago, East Khasi Hills district SP M Kharkrang said on Saturday adding Kharumnuid (46) was suspected of invoking evil spirits and was made to eat dog excreta by eight of his own relatives.
Police, meanwhile, acting on an FIR lodged on Friday, arrested seven out of the eight accused including a woman.
The arrested persons have been identified as Broswel Pyngrope (49), Elbinus Mylliemngap (37),Sanil Mylliemngap (25),Rani Kharumnuid (25),Mildret Kharumnuid (46),Khrawbor kharumnuid(21) and Johny Kharumnuid (35).
All the arrested persons have been remanded to five-day police custody.
Last week, a village elder and two others of Mawryngkang village were arrested after the district administration lodged a human right abuse complaint with the police after one Noping Khongsit was forced to eat his own excreta on the charge of witchcraft.
The family of Noping Khongsit was penalised by the village local Dorbar on the pretext that they were practicing witchcraft (men ai ksuid).
This allegation against Noping was made by four young girls of the village who claimed that they were suffering from unusual diseases due to the practice of witchcraft by Khongsit.
National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) recently issued notices to the authorities of East Khasi Hill district in connection with this case.
Taking a suo-muto cognizance of a news report on the incident at Mawryngkang, the NHRC had issued notices, returnable in four weeks, to the East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Goyal and Superintendent of Police M Kharkrang.
The Commission had observed that the contents of the press report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights to live with dignity.
