Guwahati: Opposition Asom Gana Parishad on Saturday accused the Assam government of “failing” on all fronts as it has not been able to control violence in many districts in demand of independent statehood by different groups.

“After announcing the Telangana state, the Assam government has failed to control violence. The law and order situation has completely collapsed in Karbi Anglong and BTAD districts,” AGP President Prafulla Kumar Mahanta said. Instead of holding discussions with the agitators, the Chief Minister and other senior Congress party leaders are in New Delhi for the last couple of days, he added.

Bandh by non-Bodo organisations

Meanwhile, life was hit in several lower Assam districts and stray incidents of violence were reported on the first day of the 36-hour state-wide bandh called by non Bodo organisations opposing the separate Bodoland agitation.

Police said a private vehicle was set ablaze by bandh supporters at Salbari in Baksa district during the bandh by Ana-Bodo Surakhay Samity (ABSS).

ABSS is a non-Bodo platform of 27 organisations in lower Assam fighting against the creation of a separate Bodoland carved out of Assam along the lines of Telangana.

On Friday , different Bodo organisations had called a 12-hour rail blockade to press for their demand for a separate state which affected movement of trains across the state and also led to violent incidents. (PTI)
