TURA: Crimes against women and children continue to take place in matrilineal Meghalaya with a four-year-old infant and a mentally challenged adult girl raped by their respective neighbours in the last few days in Garo Hills.

On Saturday, the four-year-old child was raped by her 14-year-old neighbour in Salbaripara village of Dalu in West Garo Hills district bordering Bangladesh.

Following the incident the accused was taken into custody by police and later transferred to the Juvenile home in Tura.

In another incident involving a neighbour, a 23-year-old mentally challenged girl residing in South West Garo Hills district was raped while her parents were away at work.

The incident took place on July 29 and it was revealed by the family only after a visit to their home by the head of a NGO which deals with specially challenged people in the state.

The rape incident was narrated by the victim when the President of the Association of Challenged People in Meghalaya (ACPM), Ms. Melip A Sangma, visited Arenggre village to check on the welfare on specially challenged persons.

“The incident took place when the girl’s family was away at work. Such acts on disabled persons were not expected from normal citizens. The ACPM strongly condemn it and demand strong action against the guilty,” informed association president Ms Melip A Sangma.
