SHILLONG: The Government is still awaiting the assent of President of India to the Meghalaya Police (Amendment) Bill 2013. The Government in April had hurriedly passed the Bill to prevent State police officials (Assam-Meghalaya Cadre), who are serving at the rank and pay of Meghalaya DGP in the State and elsewhere in the country, from becoming the Meghalaya Director General of Police.

The former Governor RS Mooshahary did not approve the Bill due to the new provision added to the old Meghalaya Police Act, 2010 for framing the new Bill which prevents capable officers from becoming the State Director General of Police. Following a direction from Mooshahary, the Government had sent the Bill to the President. An official source on Monday said that the President is yet to return the Bill.

The new Bill says that once an officer (otherwise eligible for consideration) is appointed to a post in the rank and pay of DGP anywhere, he should not be considered for the inclusion in the panel of names again for the appointment of a new DGP by the State Security Commission.
