SHILLONG, April 22: Eid-ul-Fitr was on Saturday celebrated across Meghalaya with sheer fervour as people, dressed in traditional finery, offered prayers at mosques and Eidgahs, whilst families came together for feasts.
Shiny triangular flags adorned the roads leading to Eidgahs, a place set apart for public prayers, while sellers of caps, rice vermicelli and meat shops were seen doing brisk business.
Soon after the prayers, people were hugging and greeting each other, which was then followed by mouth-watering feasts.
Politicians of Meghalaya, including Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, also took to Twitter to greet people on the occasion.
“Heartiest greetings to everyone on Eid-al-Fitr. May this special occasion strengthen peace and harmony among our communities,” said the chief minister.
AITC leader Dr Mukul Sangma also took to twitter and said, “Eid Mubarak to all my dear friends and to everyone from the Muslim faith — may this auspicious occasion instil in our hearts the power of love and sense of oneness to set a new dawn of peace, happiness & prosperity! Have a joyous celebration & stay blessed.”
Eid-ul-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, the Muslim holy month of fasting, and is celebrated during the first three days of Shawwāl, the 10th month of the Islamic calendar.
Eid-ul-Fitr is a time of official receptions and private visits, when friends greet one another, presents are given, new clothes are worn, and the graves of relatives are visited.
