‘UK govt for better ties with NE’

 AGARTALA: The British government looks forward for better ties with Northeastern states including Tripura, said British High Commissioner to India Sir James Bivan.

Sir Bivan, who arrived here on a whirlwind visit to the state and met Chief Minister Manik Sarkar and Chief Secretary SK Panda, told reporters that the visit was aimed at understanding the ground reality.

“I had good conversation with Chief Minister who took up some issues and sought help from the British authority. In course of discussion, Sarkar sought help in setting up training centre for English language”, he said at an interactive session at Agartala Press Club on Monday evening.

Sir Bivan said the Chief Minister sought British help for skill development of the youths so that they could compete with others in the competitive world. Besides, the cooperation in the energy sector also came up in the meeting.

“Since we have expertise in the energy sector especially non-conventional sector, we can share our knowledge with the state of Tripura”, he said.

Possible British investment in Tripura

Noting that Tripura made good progress in almost all fronts over the past year, Sir Bivan said, “Tripura has a promising future as peace and tranquillity prevail here. The bilateral ties Bangladesh will have a good impact in the socio-economic condition of the entire Northeast”.

This implies that the UK governemnt may look for future investments in the state in various sectors.

On being asked about the Look East policy, Sir Bivan said, “It is good move to improve ties with neighbours as the whole world is becoming integrated.

“We also want the presenting relation between India and Bangladesh to continue for mutual benefit”.

Sir Bevan also laid emphasis on better understanding between British Universities and institutes here.

“There scope to work in education sector for mutual benefit and the British High Commission will try to look into the aspect”, he added.
