Much-awaited nursing centre in WGH now up and running
TURA, April 26: The much-awaited Community Health Nursing Training Centre at Sakal A’duma under Nokrek Biosphere region in West Garo Hills, the construction of which was completed recently, has started functioning from this week and is expected to provide much more easy access to the villagers with regard to their medical needs. The project, which aims to cater to the health care services of the people of Nokrek region, will be managed by the Christian Hospital Management Committee and Nursing School, Tura, assisted by the A’chik Heritage Pursuits with construction and infrastructure activities. It may be mentioned that the training centre will be an outreach program for five years, which will then be upgraded to a Sub-Centre. The president of the A∙chik Heritage Pursuits, Prakash Momin, informed that its members have organised various donation drive programmes in order to aid the construction of the nursing centre and expressed his gratitude to all the donors for their support. He informed that the nursing centre would benefit the residents of almost eight villages, viz. Daribokgre, Mandal Nokat, Sakalgre, Balladingre, Dura Kalakgre, Sasatgre, Chandigre and Oragitok since the nearest hospital is at Asanang, about 22 kilometres away.

GHADC meet on B-Mahal areas
TURA, April 26: GHADC CEM, AR Marak, along with Deputy CEM, Nikman Ch Marak, and Chairman of the Cotton Growers’ Association, Aldo A Sangma, recently held a meeting to discuss issues pertaining to B-Mahal areas at Bolsong B-Mahal playground in North Garo Hills. During the meeting, the CEM highlighted various steps being taken by the executive committee of the GHADC, including implementation of different projects in B-Mahal areas, while Deputy CEM Nikman Ch Marak highlighted the history of B-Mahal areas and its administration. The meeting was also attended by Sordars of adjoining areas and other GHADC officials.

GSU opposes BDO’s transfer
TURA, April 26: The GSU, Western Zone North, Dadenggre, has urged the government to revoke the recent transfer of the Block Development Officer from the area. According to the union, the BDO, who belongs to the tribal community, was posted to the block on May 12 last year but was soon transferred after 10 or 11 months of his posting. “We want a Garo-speaking local to be posted as the BDO so that he understands the problems of the local people and deals with them. They should also be given time to serve the people and not transferred frequently,” the union said.
