SHILLONG: Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) P Naik on Tuesday asked the UDP leader Bindo Lanong to provide more details regarding hacking and tampering of EVMs in the last Assembly election.

Speaking to reporters, Naik said Lanong can still file an election petition as the mandatory period for filing any petition is within six months after the elections. “The court will decide the matter if a petition is filed,” he added.

Lanong had told reporters on Monday that there was hacking and tampering of EVMs during the last Assembly election which resulted in Congress getting as many as 29 seats.

According to Naik, the UDP leader can seek the nod from the Chief Election Commissioner if anyone wants to demonstrate to prove that the EVMs could be hacked.

Naik claimed that soi far no one could prove that the EVMs could be tampered.

The CEO, however, admitted that during the State Assembly election, malfunctioning of the EVMs were above normal compared to the previous elections.

To a query, the CEO said that it was upto the district councils to take a call on whether to use EVMs or go for ballot in the council polls.
