SHILLONG, May 1: The BJP wants the NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance 2.0 Government to have a cut-off date for implementing the roster system in keeping with the directive of the High Court of Meghalaya.
“We are not saying that the roster system should be implemented prospectively or retrospectively but the state government or the legislature should decide on a cut-off date,” chairman of the BJP’s internal committee to study the roster system, HM Shangpliang told reporters here on Monday.
He said the party would not like to recommend a date and would instead leave it to the wisdom of the government.
He further said senior advocate, SP Mahanta and his team have provided the legal advice to the BJP.
“We examined the legal advice during two rounds of meetings,” Shangpliang said.
He said the BJP would place its suggestions whenever Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma convenes the all-party meeting.
“We would not like to divulge any details now,” he said.
There has been a huge uproar on the implementation of the roster system after the high court accidentally came to know that it was not being followed while filling government job vacancies.
The high court immediately ordered the government to stop all recruitment processes till the roster system is in place. Civil society groups in Garo and Khasi Hills have been at loggerheads since.
Garo Hills-based groups want the roster system to be implemented retrospectively (from 1972 when Meghalaya attained statehood) while those in Khasi Hills want it to be implemented prospectively or from the date the new system is implemented.
