NONGPOH, May 5: The house of the headman of Nongagang Marngar village in Ri Bhoi District, O Binong, was gutted in fire on Thursday night.
At the time of the incident, the headman was not at his house and had gone to the residence of (L) Walinda Binong’s house, providing moral support to the family.
According to sources, the fire, which broke out at around 10 pm, has been attributed to a candle which was left burning before the family had left home.
The total loss has been estimated at around Rs. 5 lakh.
The headman, while informing about the incident, said that due to no electricity amid the ongoing load-shedding, he had to light a candle to finish some work.
After completing the work, he left the house in a hurry to visit Walinda’s family, forgetting to put off the candle.
The headman has, meanwhile, appealed to the government and the Nongpoh MLA to extend financial assistance for rebuilding his house.
