Shillong, May 8: Violence hit Manipur has named Dr Vineet Joshi as the new chief secretary of the state. The state has been shaken by violence over the previous several days.
Dr. Rajesh Kumar was replaced by Joshi, an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the Manipur cadre and a 1992 batch member.
Joshi was the Additional Secretary for the Ministry of Education’s Department of Higher Education while he was on central deputation.
According to a Personnel Ministry decision dated May 6 the Cabinet’s Appointments Committee had approved the return of Joshi to his original cadre at the government of Manipur’s request.
“The governor of Manipur is pleased to appoint Dr Vineet Joshi as chief secretary” with immediate effect, according to an order of the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms (personnel division) of the state government.
After a “Tribal Solidarity March” was arranged in the 10 hill districts on May 3 to protest against the Meitei community’s quest for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, violent clashes broke out in the northeastern state.
Over 20,000 people have already been relocated to military garrisons after being evacuated from the violent areas.
