Shillong, May 8: While Manipur is slowly limping back towards normalcy, the issue of violence has now reached Supreme Court which will hear pleas on the issue on Monday.
The northeastern state was rocked by ethnic violence between the Meiteis and tribals over the former’s demand for inclusion in Scheduled Tribe category.
Even the Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region G Kishan Reddy has stated that the central government was ready for talks with the two groups over their demands.
He said the government will take care of those who suffered losses due to violence. “If they have any problem, it is the responsibility of the state and central governments to resolve it. We should all maintain restraint. We should resolve the issues through discussions, and not through violence. Nothing can be achieved through violence,” Reddy said.
A Supreme Court panel comprised of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justices PS Narashima, and JB Pardiwala would hear several arguments on the situation in Manipur on Monday. The bench will hear three petitions, including one opposing the decision to grant the Meitei people Scheduled Tribe status and another from a tribal organisation requesting a SIT investigation into the recent unrest in Manipur.
Since clashes broke out in Manipur 23,000 people have been rescued from the violence hit areas and moved to military camps.
