SHILLONG, May 8: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Monday assured the leaders of Kuki and other communities that he would take up their issues and concerns with the central government.
“They have requested if certain issues and concerns can be raised at the Government of India-level and I have assured them that we will take up the matter as a party and I as the chief minister,” Sangma, who earlier met a delegation of the leaders of the communities, told reporters.
He said they had a detailed discussion and the community leaders asked if the Meghalaya government can assist people to come to their relatives in Shillong from Manipur.
“We have told them yes. We will do whatever is possible from our side to assist them. This is a very difficult moment and the government understands the concerns,” Sangma said.
The CM appealed to communities in Manipur to shun violence, stating that violence is not the answer. He urged them to iron out differences through dialogues.
Meanwhile, sharing figures of people from Meghalaya evacuated from Manipur, Sangma said, “Over 300 have been evacuated and they have all come in. There are just a few people left. Some want to stay there while some others are in interior locations.”
“We are in touch. We will see how to bring them back at an appropriate time,” he added.
