SHILLONG: The FKJGP, East Zone, has expressed concern over the social and economic backwardness of East Garo Hills District, particularly the district headquarters Williamnagar.
In a memorandum submitted to Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma recently, the Federation brought to the notice of the government, the grievances faced by the people of the district ranging from health, water and power supply to education and road connectivity.
President of the FKJGP East Zone, Seng Seng N Marak, in the memorandum, highlighted the lack of facilities at the Williamnagar Civil Hospital including dearth of specialist doctors and staff, diagnostic equipments, surgical instruments in the operation theatre and irregular and inadequate water supply, to name a few.
The memorandum also pointed out the need to improve the power supply in the district, while mentioning that power cut is a regular phenomenon in the district.
Besides, the need to improve the road communication, construction of women’s night shelter and creation of more posts of women police to tackle the rise of crimes against women, were also highlighted in the memorandum.
The FKJGP also appealed for the separation of the Judiciary from the Executive, terming it as the need of the hour to put in place an effective justice delivery system.
The memo also highlighted the fate of the auditorium at Williamnagar, stating that construction of the building was completed several years back, but till date the building has remained unused.
The memorandum also impressed on the need to make the Industrial Training Institute (ITI) functional considering the unemployment problem that is gripping the State while stressing on the need to start a Polytechnic institute at Williamnagar.
“We urge upon the government to notice the sorry state of affairs of the district and respond to the problems faced by the people of the district and Williamnagar in particular,” the Federation added in the memorandum.
