New district jail in NST

SHILLONG, May 18: The state government has decided to shift the Shillong District Jail to New Shillong Township (NST) to decongest the city.
Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, who is also in charge of Home (Prisons) and Urban Affairs,
On Thursday said the government has identified a 25-acre plot of land in NST where the new district jail will be constructed to accommodate 1,000 prisoners.
Dhar also inspected the ongoing construction of a shopping complex on the old MTC premises in Jail Road.
He said the project work is progressing smoothly and the government will ensure that the project is handed over to the concerned authorities within two years.
