SHILLONG: Even as the process of identifying the six to seven parcels of land to be handed over to the State Government by the defence authorities is on, differences relating to the exchange of land seems to have cropped up.
Sources from the joint special committee, comprising of State Government officials and defence authorities, formed to expedite the process of handing over of defence land said on Wednesday that even though the process of identifying land to be given by the defence authorities is on, some differences have cropped up between the State Government and the defence authorities over the government’s estimation to “give and take equal amount of land.”
The defence authorities have asserted that their land is of higher value and the matter has been referred to the Ministry of Defence for certain clarifications on the issue so as to resolve the matter at the earliest.
The defence authorities, meanwhile, have indicated Ri Bhoi district as their choice of substitute land site and the Government has asked the concerned Deputy Commissioner to file a report on the land that is premised to be handed over to the defence authorities.
The transfer of land, as agreed upon by the defence authorities, can go a long way in reducing congestion in Shillong.
The capital city may also get its first flyover soon as the defence authorities had earlier agreed in principle to hand over 0.339 square kilometre of land in Garrison ground to the State Government.
