MAWKYRWAT, June 7: Schools in South West Khasi Hills have been advised against holding any outdoor activities including morning assemblies in view of the heatwave-like situation persisting in the last few days in the district, especially in the border areas.
The District School Education Officer (DSEO), South West Khasi Hills district, S Kharsahnoh, on Wednesday, told all the heads of schools within the district not to conduct the morning assembly or any outdoor activities for the well-being of students.
The DSEO’s decision came after a delegation of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) South West Khasi Hills District met the official Wednesday morning expressing concern over the soaring temperature in the last few days.
KSU South West Khasi Hills District president Forwardman Nongrem said that during the meeting, the union had requested the DSEO to take immediate measures by instructing all the schools in the district to stop conducting the morning assembly due to the rising temperature. “With regard to the schools in the border areas, we have requested the DSEO to grant holiday for a few days because of the extreme heat,” Nongrem said, while adding that the Union has taken the decision to move the government after receiving information from many parents that some of the students collapsed during morning assembly.
According to the letter sent to different schools in the district, the DSEO said, “As a precautionary measure, school authorities are to ensure that all students stay hydrated. In case any student is affected, they should be immediately taken to the nearest health facility”.
