Mukroh case: Hearing on in Guwahati

SHILLONG, June 20: The one-man commission of inquiry headed by Justice (retd) T. Vaiphei is currently conducting the hearing into the Mukroh firing incident in Guwahati since June 15.
An official said Assam police officials and Forest personnel are afraid to come to Shillong to attend the hearing, following which the counsel representing Assam pleaded for their examination and cross-examination in Guwahati.
Additional Advocate-General of Assam, PN Goswami apprised the commission about the safety aspect due to the sensitive nature of the incident.
After hearing all the parties, the commission agreed to conduct the hearing in Guwahati.
In an order issued on Tuesday, Justice Vaiphei said Assam produced the leftover witness, Ranjit Musahary (in-charge of Mokoilum outpost) who was cross-examined by all the counsel before being discharged.
Assam also produced Kajal Nath (officer in-charge of Jirikendeng PS) whose cross-examination is will continue on Wednesday.
An official said the hearing in Guwahati may continue for some more days after which the commission will hold a final hearing in Shillong before compiling its report.
The state government is represented by S. Sahay and AS Pandey, Assam is represented by their legal counsel, D. Gogoi while the villagers of Mukroh were represented by TL Jyrwa.
