SHILLONG: The Supreme Court has deferred the hearing of the case pertaining to CMJ University.

The division bench of Justice GS Singhvi and Justice V Gopala Gowda on Thursday deferred the hearing to September 13 after lawyers defending self-appointed Chancellor of the University Chandra Mohan Jha sought more time.

The Court granted them time until September 13, sources said.

The case, which was scheduled to come up for hearing on Thursday, will look at the entire gamut of allegations against Jha and the irregularities in awarding PhDs by the thousands to scholars from across the country and abroad violating the norms laid out by the UGC. The case listed for the day relates to the interim bail granted to Jha.

The State government is contesting the anticipatory bail granted to Jha. The CID recently issued summons to Jha to appear before the investigating officer on Friday.

The Supreme Court had granted interim bail to Jha with an intention that he would cooperate with the investigating officer.

However, Jha failed to turn up which further prompted the CID to ask the accused to appear before the officer.
