In a first, students attend session

SHILLONG, June 24: For the first time in the state, the KHADC invited students from the three schools to attend the session of the Council on Saturday.
The three schools which were invited to attend the session include Little Star English School, Mawhati, Mary Mount Higher Secondary School, Mawlai Mawtawar and St Paul Higher Secondary School, Marbisu.
Speaking to reporters, KHADC Cchairman Lamphrang Blah said the students could observe the proceedings and business of the house when they are conducted.
They were also able to witness how members of the council took part in the various debate of the House, he added.
According to Blah, the visit would empower students with knowledge about the functioning of the Council and how it is empowered through various provisions laid down in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
After the end of the session for the day, the Council also held an interactive session with the students at the conference room.
The interactive session was attended by the Council Chairman along with CEM Pyniaid Sing Syiem, Deputy CEM PN Syiem, Deputy Chairman Charles Marngar and two Executive Members (EMs) Teibor Pathaw and Fantin J Lakadong.
During the interactive session, a PowerPoint presentation was given to highlight how the council came into being. The presentation also referred to late JJM Nichols Roy, the architect of the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
While speaking during interactive session, the deputy CEM mentioned that the 25 Khasi Himas or states were not under the British territories.
He said that the 25 states later signed the Instrument of Accession and Annexed Agreement with the Dominion of India between December 15, 1947, and March 19, 1948.
