SHILLONG: At a time when the State is clamouring for a strong anti-superstition law, another case of threat issued to a resident of Mawlangsu village in West Khasi Hills for allegedly practising witchcraft has come to light.

One Sokin Lawrynniang and members of his family were threatened a group of people with dire consequences. A quick reaction from the members of the local dorbar and police prevented any untoward incident from happening.

According to police, the rumour alleging Sokin of practising black magic was spread by his sister Nipbil Lawrynniang (65) and her family members.

Nipbil Lawrynniang and her two sons, Komlin Lawrynniang and Kwik Lawrynniang were arrested on Friday.

According to the FIR filed by Sokin Lawrynniang on August 15, seven people led by Komlin and Nipbil came to his house at Mawlangsu village and accused him of practising witchcraft. They also threatened him and his family members with dire consequences.

West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner S Kharlyngdoh, meanwhile, downplayed witchcraft angle saying that it (the allegation) was a ploy by Nipbil to instigate the dorbar heads to ostracize Sokin and his family members.

The arrested persons have been remanded in police custody.

Barely a week ago, three persons were hacked to death in Smit for allegedly practising witchcraft. The incident drew widespread criticism.
