SHILLONG: Purno A Sangma, founder of the National People’s Party (NPP), will kick off the party’s campaign for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections with a tour of the Garo Hills in September.

Informing this during a function organized to mark the party’s first anniversary here on Saturday, NPP leader and former Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly, Conrad Sangma said the ‘tribal centric party’ was willing to work with likeminded parties in the Khasi-Jaintia Hills region.

Stating that the party has gone through a learning experience, Conrad said that the NPP is looking forward to strengthen its base in interior parts of the State in view of the upcoming Lok Sabha and District Council elections. While admitting that the party has made a humble beginning, NPP spokesperson, James Sangma said that building a party from the scratch was a time consuming affair. Earlier, leaving the dejection of the last State Assembly election behind, the party men celebrated the occasion with much fanfare. The party flag was unfurled at the party office in the city as well as other parts of the state. The NPP performed badly in the last assembly elections and could win only two seats
