SHILLONG: The Federation of Khasi, Jaintia and Garo people (FKJGP) have questioned the statement made by Chief Secretary, WMS Pariat regarding the loopholes associated with the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the State while asking the government to weigh and consider the advantages of ILP as done by states like Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland.

In a statement issued here on Sunday, FKJGP president Joe Marwein said “How can the chief secretary already foresee that there will be loopholes when the ILP has not even been implemented?” adding that if other states can implement the ILP without facing any hurdles or criticisms from the people, “Then is what stopping Meghalaya to do the same?” he added.

Marwein mentioned that the implementation of ILP in those states have been functioning so well in as far as trade, health, education, governance and control of infiltration of illegal migrants are concerned.

“The implementation of ILP will benefit the state as a whole and it there will be no loopholes associated with it as pointed out by the chief secretary,’ the FKJGP leader said. “The Section 1 and 2 of the Regulation have clarified and given authority to the Meghalaya Government to implement ILP only by passing a notification through Official Gazette and not to be passed by the Parliament,” he added.
