NEW DELHI, June 29: Meghalaya is one of the few states in the country to have adopted a rights-based framework for making healthcare accessible and affordable to all through the Meghalaya Health Insurance Scheme (MHIS) and gives special focus on women, being one of the few remaining matrilineal societies in the world, Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh said on Thursday.
The health insurance scheme is meant for all, whether belonging to BPL or APL categories, and reduces any extra burden on the people, Lyngdoh said while addressing the 6th edition of the Doctors’ Day conclave here.
“Meghalaya has adopted a positive healthcare model that addresses the technical problems and the socio-economic determinants of its citizens. Our three-dimensional approach focuses on building the curative aspects of healthcare in addition to the preventive and enabling dimensions,” she said.
The Measurable Outcomes Transforming Health sector through a holistic approach with a focus on women’s Empowerment or MOTHER was launched at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 through a holistic approach with a focus on women’s empowerment, she said.
“In Meghalaya, communities at the grassroots have been involved in a big way along with their traditional knowledge and learnings into our health systems,” she said.
“Meghalaya has also adopted innovative missions like Early Childhood Development Mission, DREAM Mission—Drug Reduction, Elimination & Action Mission but being a small state, we have to depend largely on central funding and often its pool of resources remain insufficient,” she pointed out.
