Shillong, June 30: The government is preparing to present a bill on the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code during the upcoming monsoon session of Parliament, as per reports. It is likely that the bill will be referred to the parliamentary standing committee, which will seek input from various stakeholders on the Uniform Civil Code.
The decision comes after the Parliamentary Standing Committee on personnel, public grievances, law, and justice summoned representatives from the Law Commission and the law ministry on July 3. The Law Commission had issued a notice seeking opinions from stakeholders on the matter of a Uniform Civil Code.
As per the schedule of the standing committee on law and personnel, representatives from the law panel, legal affairs, and legislative departments of the law ministry will provide their views on the public notice issued by the Law Commission of India on June 14, 2023. This notice invited feedback from diverse stakeholders on the Uniform Civil Code under the subject of “Review of Personal Laws.”
The monsoon session is expected to commence in the third week of July, with initial sittings taking place in the old Parliament building and later transitioning to the new building.
In a recent address, Prime Minister Modi strongly advocated for uniform laws applicable to all communities, stating that the issue was being used to provoke Muslims. Even the Supreme Court has expressed support for a Uniform Civil Code. However, those engaged in vote bank politics are opposing it, according to PM Modi. He questioned the viability of having two parallel systems and raised the topic, which is closely associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), less than a year before the Lok Sabha elections.
