No flood in Garo Hills since 2006: Centre

 NEW DELHI: Many parts of Garo Hills get inundated by severe floods during every monsoon.

The Centre surprisingly claims that since 2006 no inundation of areas had been reported from the Garo Hills region of the State.

“Moreover, the Ganga Flood Control Commission has identified as many as 39 flood-hit districts in Assam, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal but none in Meghalaya, the Minister of Water Resources, Harish Rawat on Monday said while replying to a question tabled by Meghalaya’s lone member in Rajya Sabha, Wansuk Syiem.

“As per the data base maintained by Central Water Commission (CWC) and Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), no inundation has been reported from Meghalaya since 2006,” Rawat said.

Syiem earlier said the large extent of habitations in Garo Hills region along the banks of rivers Ringgi and Jinjiram get inundated during rainy season.
