Shillong, July 7: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi suffered a significant setback when the Gujarat High Court upheld the Sessions court’s decision to reject his plea for a stay on his defamation conviction.
The case stemmed from his 2019 remark regarding surname ‘Modi’. The high court, while delivering the verdict, stated that the previous order was both lawful and appropriate.
As a consequence of the upheld conviction, Rahul Gandhi will be unable to participate in electoral contests and is barred from seeking the reinstatement of his suspended status as a Member of Parliament (MP). This development deals a blow to his political ambitions and significantly limits his future political engagements.
