SHILLONG, July 9: With the proposed implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) drawing severe criticism and opposition in Meghalaya, the State BJP has cautioned critics of the proposed law not to make presumptions since the draft bill is yet to be out.
Various political parties of the state have expressed stiff opposition to the UCC over apprehension that it would have a devastating impact on the rights and the way of life of the tribals.
NPP national president and Chief Minister, Conrad K. Sangma had also stated that the proposed law goes against the actual idea of India.
“Discussion on UCC has been there for a very long time. We are being pre-judgemental. We should wait for the government to come out with the draft bill and then we can discuss it,” BJP spokesperson, Mariahom Kharkrang said on Sunday.
Recently, Meghalaya BJP vice president and Tura MDC, Bernard Marak had claimed that the UCC will only be implemented in the “general areas” of the country and not in tribal states that are protected under the Sixth Schedule.
He had claimed that UCC will not affect the tribal areas which are protected under special provisions of the Constitution.
“BJP wants to uplift the NE region and its intention is not to intrude into the tribal areas or to dilute the beautiful culture, tradition and practices of the tribals,” Marak had asserted.
