MAWKYRWAT, July 11: In an inspiration invoking feat, condemned JNNURM buses abandoned in garages, thought to be a waste, were repaired and used as college buses by Sngap Syiem College, Mawkyrwat, South West Khasi Hills.
These college buses were on Tuesday launched by Mawkyrwat MLA Renikton L Tongkhar, who termed the initiative of the governing body of Sngap Syiem College as ‘wealth out of wastes’.
The former minister lauded the college over its progress in recent years. He thanked the state government for handing over the once defunct buses which were dumped in garages to the college.
Principal of Sngap Syiem College, Dr KK Nongsiej said that the poor performance of the college earlier was probed and it was found out that “one of the main reasons was the absence of transportation facilities”.
“…some students have to pay Rs 200 per day for transport to reach the college. Therefore, after thorough discussion on the issue, we have decided to go ahead with the idea of having college buses with a low cost fare,” the principal said.
According to the Nongsiej, two buses are ready to hit the road. One will operate in the Wahsiej-Mawthawpdah-Sngimawlein area and the other in Rangmaw-Jakrem and other adjacent villages. He also informed that two more buses will join the service soon.
