SHILLONG: The State Government on Thursday directed all the senior Government officials and other employees to keep Government vehicles in safe custody to prevent any case of arson after the talks between Government and pressure groups on ILP fall flat.

As per the notification, the officials have also been directed to keep vigil in order to ensure that no government property is damaged.

There have been several cases of torching of Government vehicles and buildings by miscreants during the agitation backed by the NGOs in the past and the challenge of the authorities is to prevent occurrence of such incidents in the near future.

Security has been beefed up in the city after the NGOs called for a 12-hour bandh on Monday.

Heavy frisking of vehicles was also carried out by police in different parts of the city. Security personnel were seen patrolling the city.

A senior police official informed that the police are taking all measures to ensure that situation remains normal.

Meanwhile, an otherwise busy Iewduh bore a dull look on Thursday with a minimal turn up of customers in the market.

Fear psychosis gripped the city soon after the meeting between the NGOs and Government ended in a stalemate. Many shops in Khyndailad kept their shutters down for few minutes after NGO leaders walked through the area shouting slogans demanding the introduction of ILP.
