Non-tribals in New Nongstoin issued quit notices

NONGSTOIN: Acting on its own, the Village Defence Party (VDP) of New Nongstoin village in West Khasi Hills District on Saturday issued ‘quit notices’ to all the non-tribal residents of the village who did not possess valid documents to prove their identity.

VDP general secretary Kynjai Thongni informed media persons on Sunday about the VDP’s decision saying that the non-tribal people have been issued a 14-day deadline [September 2 till September 15, 2013] to leave the district bag and baggage.

Warning that violators of the ‘quit notice’ would be dealt with firmly, Thongni urged the local residents of New Nongstoin village not to provide shelter or any other form of help to any of the non-tribals.

Explaining the reason behind the ‘quite notice’, Thongni stated that non-tribal people, working and residing under the jurisdiction of New Nongstoin village, did not possess valid papers and had illegally settled in New Nongstoin area.
