SHILLONG: Intensifying their agitation for implementation of ILP in the State, the ten NGOs led by KSU and FKJGP have announced a road blockage for three nights in the entire state as their second round of agitation beginning from September 4.
The night road blockade would be effective from 9 pm till 5 am of the following day.
“We have decided to intensify our agitation since the State Government is still adamant over our demand on implementation of ILP,” KSU vice president Frederick Kharmawphlang said after a meeting of the ten NGOs on Monday night.
He said the NGOs were going to announce their next phase of agitation after the end of night road blockade “if Government refuses to comply with our demand.”
Meanwhile, the KSU vice president appreciated the support of the general public towards the 12-hour bandh.
“We urge the general public to continue to extend their support to the NGOs in the fight to safeguard the interests of indigenous population from the onslaught of people from outside,” Kharmawphlang said.
Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma has already rejected the organisations’ demand to implement the ILP sysyem. Instead, the government would resort to existing and new laws and mechanisms to tackle the unabated influx of migrants, he said.
“It is our shared objective to check influx and infiltration and we require further engagement and cooperation of NGOs instead of a confrontational attitude,” Dr Sangma had said recently. (With inputs from agencies)
