SHILLONG, July 29: Apprehensive of a possible defeat, Meghalaya TMC may not field candidates for Shillong parliamentary seat in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
“We were not very successful in the Assembly elections, especially in the Khasi and Jaintia Hills region. It will be difficult to take a call on whether to put up candidates or not,” state TMC president Charles Pyngrope told reporters here on Saturday.
When asked if the party is going to support candidates of other parties, Pyngrope said that the TMC will deliberate over this only after they have decided to not field candidate. “We shall cross the bridge when we come to it,” he said.
It may be mentioned that the Congress has already decided to field MPCC president Vincent Pala, who will be seeking re-election after the 2024 MP elections from Shillong parliamentary seat.
With regard to Tura seat, the Congress, however, will call for applications from interested candidates, Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Ronnie V Lyngdoh had earlier informed.
On the other hand, as many as six aspirants from the NPP camp have applied for ticket to contest next year’s Lok Sabha elections from Shillong.
