SHILLONG: In what left the Jowai Police red-faced, the medical report it submitted terming a minor rape victim as an adult was proved wrong following a second opinion given by NEIGHRIMS.
The report vindicated the stand of the victim’s mother who had all along claimed that her daughter is a 15-year-old and challenged the radiological report verified by Dr D Lakiang of Jowai Civil Hospital which stated that the girl is above 18.
The report provided by NEIGHRIMS stated that the victim is around 15-17 years old.
According to CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing, in many such cases medical reports were prepared in favour of the rapist.
“The Government does not seem to take such cases of heinous nature against women and children seriously, and the same is evident from the appointments of insensitive doctors and police officers,” she added.
The 15-year-old from Nangbah village was raped by one Dayo-Phiki Hinge at Iapkata village near Jowai on August 12. The accused had allegedly dragged the victim into his vehicle at Nangbah Iawmusiang when the latter was coming home from school.
Hinge threatened the girl with a knife and later took her to Sahbsein road in Iapkata where he committed the crime inside the vehicle. The accused later dropped the girl at her residence. An FIR was filed on the same night by the family members of the victim following which the accused was arrested.
