JOWAI, Aug 1: Residents of Labang-Nongphyllut and Pangam Raliang villages under Block-I area in Jaintia Hills have levelled serious complaints against the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council alleging that the Assam-based council was employing insurgents to restrict the free movement of Khasi-Pnar people living on either side of the interstate border.
The locals also claimed that the illegal tax gate at Khanduli village, set up by the KAAC, was an attempt to snatch Meghalaya soil to territory.
The tax gate was also meant to prevent the Khasi-Pnars from selling their agricultural produce and other commodities.
Chairman of Hynniewtrep Border Disputed Redressal Forum (HBDRF) and resident of Elaka Labang Nongphyllut, Chandame Sungoh said local Karbi channels had published news on the arrest of two members of the newly-created United People’s Front of Karbi Longri (UPFKL) identified as Rajesh Phangso and Rajesh Engti, the alleged leader of the insurgent group.
As many as 41 demand notes were recovered from their possession along with a cache of weapons.
