Nongpoh, Aug 5: In a bid to empower local farmers and unite them for the promotion of agricultural products, the Ri Bhoi Tourism and Environment Development Forum (RBTEDF) hosted the third annual Pineapple Festival at the district transport office premises.
The event witnessed the esteemed presence of Minister in-charge of Agriculture & IPR for the Government of Meghalaya, Ampareen Lyngdoh, as the chief guest.
Joined by MLA Mayralborn Syiem, MDC, Balajied Ranee, RBTEDF president Plielad Tiewsoh and other officials, the festival brought together officers from various departments, Synjuk ki Rangbah shnong representatives, and headmen.
Aimed at fostering collaboration, the event showcased the participation of numerous village organisations, self-help groups (SHGs) and co-operative societies.
A total of 24 stalls were proudly set up by farmers to exhibit an array of agricultural produce, prominently featuring the region’s renowned pineapple offerings.
Addressing the gathering, Ampareen Lyngdoh lauded the RBTEDF’s proactive approach in motivating the farmers to enhance their pineapple and other agricultural yields.
She commended the diverse farmers’ groups from different villages for their enthusiastic involvement in the festival.
She emphasised the significance of recognising pineapple growers as organic producers and granting them certification.
This recognition, she explained, would empower farmers to promote and elevate their produce for sustainable livelihoods.
Highlighting recent developments, Lyngdoh revealed that Ri Bhoi district had acquired four cold storage facilities distributed across various localities.
She encouraged farmers from different regions to engage with the agriculture office to leverage these benefits.
Notably, the state’s natural fruit and vegetable juices have gained international attention paving the way for increased processing facilities and infrastructural support.
Lyngdoh underscored the district’s fertile soil and favorable climate, blessing Ri Bhoi with agricultural potential and contributing to its status as a burgeoning tourism hub.
She urged local residents to strive for prosperity by harnessing their agricultural and tourism resources.
The festival’s festivities concluded with the presentation of awards for the best stall and captivating cultural performances.
