Textile exhibition to mark National Handloom Day

Tura, August 8: The Department of Textile and Apparel Designing and AICRP-WIA jointly celebrated National Handloom Day recently, with an Exhibition cum Fair and weavers’ workshop at College of Community Science, CAU, Tura.

During the programme, weavers, artisans, master weavers and entrepreneurs from the AICRP adopted villages of West Garo Hills (Rongram block, Gambegre block) and South West Garo Hills district (Rerapara block) actively participated in the exhibition cum fair and workshop programme.

West Garo Hills ADC Dolrich B.G Momin participated on the occasion as Chief Guest and delivered an insightful address on importance of handloom industry, handloom weavers and their role in attaining a sustainable livelihood for the family and nations economy.

The programme was also attended by Guest of honour Dr Sanre G. Momin, Zonal Director, Sericulture Department, Meghalaya.  Speaking on the occasion, Momin highlighted various schemes and facilities from the department of sericulture for the weavers.

The Dean, College of Community Science, CAU, Tura, Dr. Jyoti  V Vastrad presided over the inaugural session and said that upskilling of handloom weavers, weaving variations in designs and product development is very essential to encourage and preserve such indigenous products.

Craftathon and reel making competitions in lieu with national Handloom Day were organized and prizes were distributed to the winners. Walkathon to encourage handloom weavers and handwoven goods was a part of the programme.

The traditional handloom textiles of North East India and different handloom products were showcased in the exhibition. Dr Mamoni Probha Borah, Asst. Prof. and Dr Anupama Mishra Assoc. Prof and Head, Dept of Textile and Apparel Designing were the organizers.
