Baghmara, Aug 9: A tragic incident occurred in the border area between India and Bangladesh after a BSF jawan, identified as Vijay Kumar was killed after he and his colleague were attacked by a herd of wild elephants on their way to border duty near the village of Nilwagre in South Garo Hills (SGH).

As per police reports, Kumar and his colleague were on a motorcycle and proceeding towards Nilwagre border outpost (BOP) from Doomdomma on official duty.

“On reaching the border road between Rasnagre and Nilwagre, they were attacked by a herd of wild elephants. Constable Vijay Kumar received bodily injuries and was rushed to the nearby Sibbari PHC by locals from near the area. However, by the time he reached the PHC, he was declared dead on arrival,” informed superintendent of police, SGH, Abraham T Sangma.

Police sources confirmed the incident took place at about 12:30 PM this afternoon. In a really heartwarming gesture, locals from both sides of the border, which remains open during daytime for purposes of agriculture by both Indians and Bangladeshis, were seen helping the jawan immediately after the pachyderms left.

A herd of wild pachyderms have apparently been based near the border between Dalu to Sibbari and beyond for the past 2 months. Earlier there were quite a few reports of border residents suffering injuries when they came close to where the pachyderms were holed up, though there were no casualties reported.

The herd has reportedly also damaged a huge amount of crops as well as betel nut plantations raised by border residents.
