Shillong, August 10: The Hydro projects for which MOUs were signed years ago continued to be scrapped and after scrapping few, the government will now even scrap Kynshi I project.

Revealing this, Power Minister AT Mondal said that the MOU with the independent Power producer will be scrapped as they are coming up with a new model which will be supposedly more viable.

The Power Minister AT Mondal was reacting to the proposal by Hynniewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC) for the revival, and setting up of power projects such as Rangmaw Hydel Project, Kynshi Hydel Project (Stage 2), thermal power plant in South West Khasi Hills, and others.

As far Kynshi II , the Government would have to get new height of the dam since the present planned height of the dam is not viable

As far as Mawphu project is concern, people are not willing to give their land and Government is requesting NGOs to convince people to give their land and permission for the project

As far as a 500 mw Thermal power project in the state, NEEPCO has refused to continue with it as they don’t want to go for thermal project henceforth and as far as another 240 mw Thermal project, there is no correspondence with the DS group which was supposed to develop the project

The Minister however said that the government was trying to ensure that some projects come up and efforts were also on to minimize the losses.

Apart from Umiam, other hydro projects in the state are run of the river projects and they generate to their full capacity during rainy season

Meghalaya some days produce around 4-5 million units of power while on some days, it generates 1 million units depending on the rain.
