NONGPOH, Aug 12: Tensions flared in Sumer village of Ri-Bhoi as the Joint Action Committee of Landowners of Shillong Western Bypass (JAC-LSWB) launched a vehement protest against the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) over the alleged claims on land made by the corporation. The JAC-LSWB, formed by more than 80 landowners from Sumer village, came forward to raise their voice against the alleged claims made by the MeECL on their lands, calling for the intervention of the state government.
The Sumer village community’s concerns stem from the proposed construction of the Shillong Western Bypass, aimed at alleviating traffic congestion in the Shillong area. However, the project has become mired in controversy due to MeECL’s sudden claims on several plots of land in the vicinity, which the landowners assert rightfully belong to them.
Chairman of the JAC-LSWB, Donkupar Sumer, expressed their resolute determination to protest against MeECL’s claims, highlighting that the land in question has been occupied by the villagers for decades. These landowners possess valid documents of ownership, issued by both local traditional authorities and the Revenue department of the Deputy Commissioner of Ri-Bhoi. While they recognise the necessity of development, particularly the road construction, their protest is directed squarely at MeECL’s land claims.
While appreciating the government’s efforts to improve infrastructure and address traffic issues, Sumer made it clear that the protest is solely directed at MeECL’s actions “who have claimed our lands, and we will fight against this to prove our ownership of the land even if it is to go to court.”
An affected landowner, Tinus Kharsawian, shared her dismay over MeECL’s assertion on her land. She declared her intention to actively oppose the claims on her property, citing decades of residence and proper registration with the authorities. Kharsawian voiced her determination to protect her land rights vigorously.
In response to the mounting tensions, the JAC has announced its plan to submit a formal complaint to the state government in the coming days.
The committee seeks government intervention to address the alleged land claims by MeECL. They issued a stern warning that failure to heed their demands could lead to more stringent actions and intensified protests.
