Fund crisis led to Sohra project money withdrawal

SHILLONG: Financial constrains have compelled the State Government to withdraw the budget provision of Rs 27 crore meant for Sohra Eco Restoration Project.

Informing this here on Monday, Deputy Chief Minister in-charge- Soil and Water Conservation Rowell Lyngdoh, however, said that the money would be sanctioned in the near future and other related departments would execute the project.

“There is also a thinking to link the project with the Integrated Basin Development Programme,” he said.

There was a strong protest from the residents of Sohra after Government withdrew the amount meant for the project.

The six-year scheme ‘Cherrapunjee Ecological Project Restoration of Degraded Lands under Sohra Plateau’ approved by the Planning Commission was estimated at the cost of Rs 87.16 crore.

According to reports, the first and second installment worth Rs 16 crore and Rs 18 crore each have already been utilised.
