Departmental probe begins against accused cop

SHILLONG: The Home Department has instituted a departmental proceeding against Ampati twin rape case accused Nurul Islam.

Informing this here on Wednesday, a senior police official said charges would be framed against Islam, a police sub-inspector, once the departmental inquiry was over.

While replying to a query, he said that he would not be able to comment whether Islam would be dismissed from service.

“It is too early to talk on this since the departmental proceeding has just begun,” the police official said.

He informed that police have already seized the account of Islam besides attaching his properties.

“Efforts are on to nab the sub-inspector. We are also in touch with the police of the various districts of Assam,” the police official said.

Earlier, police had sent three teams to Shillong, Guwahati and Dhubri to trace the accused.

Islam, a sub inspector of Meghalaya police, allegedly had raped two sisters in Ampati, the home constituency of Chief Minster Dr Mukul Sangma.

Islam had allegedly raped a 14-year-old girl in Ampati police station on March 13 this year. On March 31, he raped the victim’s 17-year-old sister at gunpoint in their house. Islam was picked up on June 1. However, he escaped from police custody in Tura. Police have already issued a look notice for Islam, but in vain.
