NONGSTOIN, Aug 27: In view of the series of events that unfurled on Thursday when a public hearing venue was vandalised as a mark of protest in East Jaintia Hills, the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has called for a boycott of Topcem cement, which is produced by a factory in East Jaintia Hills.
The HYC’s decision to boycott the Topcem cement comes in the wake of the recent violence that broke out at the public hearing as people reportedly protested against the environmental impact of the cement factory.
The HYC distributed letters appealing to cement suppliers in West Khasi Hills on August 26 urging them to stop selling Topcem cement.
HYC president Lumlang Kharsyiemlieh said that the boycott is necessary so that a strong message is sent to the cement factory. It has urged the people of the district to boycott the cement too.
The HYC has condemned the Thursday’s violence, in which a woman was among those lathi-charged by the police.
