Logical conclusion must be reached while investigating cases: Chief Justice

Guwahati, August 29: Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court Justice Sandeep Mehta inaugurated a workshop on “Improvement of criminal justice system,” organised by the Assam Police at the Assam Administrative Staff College here on Tuesday.

In his deliberation, the Chief Justice spoke about coining a plan to train the stakeholders of the criminal justice delivery system by the domain experts to bring about improvements.

“Domain experts comprising Sawai Singh Godara, a retired IPS officer; P.V Verma, former deputy director, prosecution and V.N Mathur, former director, Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) from Rajasthan are imparting trainings in these workshops, whose vast knowledge and experience will benefit the participants,” he said.

The Chief Justice further said it was imperative that logical conclusion must be reached while investigating cases and stressed the need to follow the correct procedure of search and seizure.

Assam DGP, Assam, Special DGP (headquarters), Advocate General of Assam, IGP (CID) and other dignitaries were present at the workshop organised for improvement of criminal justice system and establishing synergy amongst the pillars of justice delivery system in Assam.

Three more workshops of similar nature are scheduled at Dergaon, Bongaigaon and Silchar to be attended by the investigators, public prosecutors and the judiciary.

In his welcome address, Assam DGP GP Singh expressed gratitude to the Chief Justice for paving the way for the improvement of the criminal justice system.

He further said that the state police force would take all the means for achieving conviction rates on a par with the national average.

Advocate General of Assam, Devajit Saikia, while addressing the gathering, said that the loopholes in investigation and prosecution need to be plugged to achieve higher conviction rates.
