Water project opens in Sohra

 SHILLONG: A rainwater harvesting project conceived and funded by the Meghalaya Water Harvesting Mission was inaugurated at St John Bosco Boys’ Higher Secondary School, Sohra on Friday.

This is the first model ever made in Cherrapunjee region to tap rainwater. The rainwater from the roof is allowed to flow to an underground storage for purification through five strong filtered chambers.

The project started in September 2010 was completed in April this year. The Mission has funded Rs 5.5 lakh for construction of storage and PVC water reservoir etc.

The tank can provide water to the school for not less than three months in case of water scarcity.

Each of the five chambers has the storage capacity of 20,000 litres.

Inaugurating the project, the Mission Director, Meghalaya Water Harvesting Mission, KL Tariang congratulated the school authorities for taking up the work sincerely.
